Intrauterine Insemination

Intrauterine Insemination, or IUI, is a common fertility treatment that aims to increase chances of a successful pregnancy. IUI is an excellent option for couples having trouble getting pregnant who want to avoid more extensive fertility treatments such as IVF. IUI is also cost-effective, making it an attractive option for prospective parents. Learn everything you need to know about IUI in South Jersey below.

Intrauterine Insemination: Initial Steps

Intrauterine Insemination is a fertility treatment that involves directly injecting sperm into the woman’s uterus to increase the chances of the eggs being fertilized. The first step of IUI is making an appointment with a fertility specialist. They will ensure that IUI is an treatment option for you.

Next, sperm must be collected from either the recipient’s partner or a frozen specimen can be delivered from a sperm bank. The sperm that is collected is processed in a lab so that the highest concentration can be prepared for injection into the recipient. A frozen specimen would be thawed and prepared for insemination. The recipient’s cycle will be tracked carefully by a fertility specialist to pinpoint the exact optimal time for injection. In most cases, a medication to induce ovulation is prescribed medication to help better time the IUI.

The IUI Procedure

On the day your fertility specialist has determined will be the best point in the ovulation cycle for implantation, your IUI procedure will take place. The IUI procedure can take place at a fertility specialist’s office and the entire procedure takes under 15 minutes.

Your doctor will place a very thin catheter through the cervix and into the uterus. A small syringe containing the washed and concentrated sperm will be inserted into the catheter and go directly into the uterus.

What Happens After IUI?

After the actual procedure, most women experience mild symptoms such as minor cramping. After two weeks from the Intrauterine Insemination, a blood test will be drawn to confirm pregnancy. During this time period following the procedure, it is important to refrain from strenuous exercise and allow yourself to rest and relax.
