Fertility Treatments for Women Over 40
Fertility & IVF for Women after 40
Fertility rates naturally decline with age. Unfortunately, women experience a more rapid decline after age 35, and even more so after age 40. If you are 40 or older and interested in conceiving or struggling to conceive, often it is most beneficial to undergo fertility testing and treatment as soon as possible.
Studies have shown that in many cases moving directly to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) can yield much higher overall pregnancy rates than trying other treatments first, and decrease the time to pregnancy. This is important to capture the health of the eggs before they are even more affected by the aging process. Learn more about how your age affects your chances of getting pregnant, as well as fertility options for women over 40 below.
How Your Age Affects Your Ability to Conceive
Age affects both the quantity and quality of eggs that are available. While at age 30, only 30% of eggs are chromosomally abnormal, by age 40, that number doubles to 60% abnormal. Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) can be used to test embryos so that only the chromosomally normal embryos are selected to transfer to the uterus. These tested normal embryos would have a very high potential for resulting in a live birth, and decrease the chance of either no pregnancy or miscarriage. We suggest PGS to many of our patients who are ages 40 and older.
While no one can change the number of eggs that the ovaries contain, we use a variety of effective IVF protocols to help increase our chances of a successful pregnancy.
Each of our fertility treatment plans are unique to the patient, as we take into account the patient’s medical history, prior treatments, and other important information. This allows us to optimize the number of eggs that are available at the start of an IVF cycle and that respond to stimulation medication.
