Fertility Treatment for Same Sex Couples in NJ
LGBTQ Family Building Options
We have been helping LGBTQ patients build their desired families since the inception of South Jersey Fertility Center in 1989. Same sex couples have unique fertility needs which require a sensitive, supportive and knowledgeable approach. Fortunately, many patients have an excellent chance of success through the various treatments that we offer.
The World Health Organization states that “Reproductive rights rest on the recognition of the basic right of all couples and individuals to decide freely and responsibly the number, spacing and timing of their children and to have the information and means to do so, and the right to attain the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health.” All of us at SJFC wholeheartedly endorse this sentiment and firmly believe in everyone’s right to have the dream of parenthood fulfilled in the way that best suits them.
Options for Lesbians
While many options are available, by far the most common treatment is insemination with donor sperm.
In Vitro Fertilization
A very popular option among female couples is “Co-IVF” which is also called “Reciprocal IVF.” In this treatment option, the egg from one partner is fertilized with donor sperm and the resulting embryo is transferred to the other partner to carry the pregnancy.
Some individuals or couples will require the use of a donor egg to achieve a pregnancy. Donor eggs can be fertilized with donor sperm to create embryos for transfer. Another option is to use embryos which have been donated anonymously from another couple who have embryos remaining from their own IVF cycle. Either or both members of an LGBTQ couple may have the embryos transferred. Embryos created through IVF can be frozen which allows our couples to space their pregnancies as they wish.
Options for Gay Men
Our Egg Donor Program
For same sex male couples who want to build their family, a gestational carrier and separate egg donor are needed. After the couple selects an egg donor and the donor has her egg retrieval, the sperm is fertilized to create an embryo. The embryo is then transferred and carried to term by the selected gestational carrier.
Our Donor Egg Coordinator will work closely with you to set up all psychological and legal requirements needed for this process.
